A Message From Principal Ruzek |
| ROCKET FAMILY I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and refreshing winter break. It’s great to welcome our students back as we begin the new year together.
As we move through January, we are quickly approaching the end of first semester. Our last day of the semester is January 22, and students will not report to school on January 23. With only a few weeks remaining, we encourage all students to stay focused and finish the semester strong.
Please continue to watch your email for important updates regarding registration information for the upcoming school year, as well as details about end-of-winter and spring testing.
We are excited about what’s ahead in second semester and proud of the hard work taking place every day at JMHS. I also invite you to come support our students by attending a boys or girls basketball game, a wrestling match, a boys swim meet, and many other activities happening right here at John Marshall High School.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance. —Go Rockets!

Student Life & Activities |
There are a multitude of ways for students to be involved in activities at John Marshall. The best way for students & families to be informed about these opportunities is by checking the JMHS Website.

Our Winter Athletics season started in November. Use this link to see when different meets & games are happening. This is a great way for your student to be involved in the school culture. |
|
JM offers many clubs after and before school. Visit the club and activities web page to view our clubs, including the days and times they meet, as well as the club advisor. Clubs are a great way for your student to build connections & try a new skill. |

"I've made a lot of new friends that have similar interests to me." - Shash |
| |
Clubs are an awesome way to meet new people, try out new experiences, and learn a new skill. And at JM, there are no shortages of clubs. Last year, a student advocated to start a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) Club at John Marshall, and today it has grown to 25-30 active members. Outside of learning about career paths in the Healthcare field, students compete at competitions. Shash & Ali will be competing this Friday in Medical Math & Terminology.

"My favorite parts are the fundraising and socializing at the end of meetings." - Ali |

JM Gives ... Delivers BIG Once Again! | |
|
Annually, JM Gives is a highlight for students, and staff alike. The halls are overtaken by singing, selling and other shenanigans, all in an effort to raise money for two local non-profit.
For John Marshall, the receiving organizations are Family Promise Rochester & Christmas Anonymous. Last year, JM raised over $35K towards these local non-profits, and this year we surpassed last year by over $5,000! We are immensely proud of the efforts that students, staff, family & community put into all three high schools! |

Celebrations & Spotlights

"The December Sports Jamboree was a highlight - the camaraderie between the students had my heart exploding! -Marie Soller, Unified Advisor |
| JM Unified Makes Its Debut |
Unified is a program that aims to bring together students with and without disabilities as teammates, classmates and friends. Marie Soller, Classroom Teacher, felt compelled to start a Unified program at JM to help bridge a gap between students who often feel unseen and unconnected, and their peers. The JM Unified program is still in its infancy, but growing. If students are interested in becoming involved, talk to Mrs. Soller or watch for flyers in the building. So far Unified has focused on awareness of the program through events, but the goal is to establish a club that meets weekly.

Academics & Opportunities |
There are many ways we work to support your student at JM. This section will highlight a couple each month. |
|
|
Academic Support & Homework Help |
Does your student want some extra academic support? Here's some ideas: |
- Talk with the Classroom Teacher - they are first go-to, as they know the content, assignments & learning goals
-
Visit the W.I.N. Room (What I Need) during the school day. It is located just inside of the Library, open most periods & staff by JM teachers. This is a great opportunity to get some 1-on-1 help from a staff offering a new perspective, make up a test or have an accountability buddy. See schedule for times/days. NEW SEMESTER 2 Schedule Attached
-
Attend After School Homework Help. This is a free offering to JM students, runs out of the Library, and is staffed by JM teachers. You do not have to attend every day - do what works for you!

If your family or your child needs attendance support, please reach out to Ms. Rogers. |
|
It has been inspiring to see our newest students building strong habits in their first year of high school. Currently, 74% of our freshman class has an attendance rate of 90% or higher, which is an important benchmark for staying on track for graduation. Attendance is the strongest predictor of academic success—students who attend school consistently are far more likely to earn credits and progress on pace. This level of commitment shows that many of our freshmen are developing the routines and responsibility needed for a successful first year and a timely graduation.
