The Rocket Monthly: February 2026

A Message From Principal Ruzek

ROCKET FAMILY

As we move into February, I want to take a moment to reflect on a strong start to the school year and share a few important updates.

We have officially completed our first semester of the year. This is a great time for parents and guardians to review student grades in Skyward. As you do, here are a few helpful questions to consider with your student:
- Are you on track with your credits?
- Are you on track with your GPA?
- Are you on track with attendance?
- Are you on track with your required classes?

If you have any questions or concerns after reviewing grades, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s guidance counselor. They are an excellent resource and are always happy to help support student success.

It has truly been a great first semester, and we are incredibly proud of all of our students—especially our freshmen. The Class of 2029 has demonstrated the most consistent attendance of any grade level at John Marshall High School. Way to go, freshmen! We are excited to see you continue to grow and succeed.

As we look ahead, families and students are encouraged to begin watching for spring activity sign-ups and schedules. Spring activities provide wonderful opportunities for students to stay engaged, build connections, and explore new interests.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of John Marshall High School. We are grateful to work alongside such a dedicated school community.

. —Go Rockets!

More Than a Game: Esports Finds Its Place

"Esports continues to grow across the nation and offers middle and high school students a new way to compete in extracurricular activities while developing communication and leadership skills. John Marshall's esports team has grown from six JM students competing on laptops to fifteen students from JM, Mayo, and Century competing on laptops, desktops, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch's. Teams currently compete in Super Smash Brother's Ultimate, Valorant, and Marvel Rivals. This year's Marvel Rivals and Varsity Valorant teams are well on their way to the state championship, maintaining impressive win streaks. The program hopes to grow next year as it continues to offer a range of games for players to compete in such as League of Legends and Minecraft Bedwars."

Celebrations & Spotlights

"We most enjoy the culture of the guys on the team, and playing with a bunch of our friends."
- JM Boys' Hockey, Hatcher & Bennett

Century/JM Boys Hockey Tops Crosstown Rival at Hockey Day Minnesota

JM/Century Boys' Hockey had an exciting win at Hockey Day Minnesota on January 17th against cross-town rival, Mayo. They were especially excited for this win after a loss to Mayo earlier in the season. These two agreed that playing on the outdoor rink was super fun and created a great atmosphere, with fans in the bleachers. Both started hockey at a young age in elementary school, but clearly still love it!

If you have the opportunity to participate in a school sport or club - seize it! It is a great way to build friendships, develop skills and create lasting memories.

Academics & Opportunities

There are many ways we work to support your student at JM. This section will highlight a couple each month.

Academic Support & Homework Help

Does your student want some extra academic support? Here's some ideas:

  • Talk with the Classroom Teacher - they are first go-to, as they know the content, assignments & learning goals
  • Visit the W.I.N. Room (What I Need) during the school day. It is located just inside of the Library, open most periods & staff by JM teachers. This is a great opportunity to get some 1-on-1 help from a staff offering a new perspective, make up a test or have an accountability buddy. See schedule for times/days.
  • Attend After School Homework Help. This is a free offering to JM students, runs out of the Library, and is staffed by JM teachers. You do not have to attend every day - do what works for you!

It has been inspiring to see our newest students building strong habits in their first year of high school. Semester One, the Class of 2029 has demonstrated the most consistent attendance of any grade level at John Marshall High School. which is an important benchmark for staying on track for graduation. Attendance is the strongest predictor of academic success—students who attend school consistently are far more likely to earn credits and progress on pace. This level of commitment shows that many of our freshmen are developing the routines and responsibility needed for a successful first year and a timely graduation.
