ROCKET FAMILY
February went by in a blink, and we are now looking ahead to spring at John Marshall High School. As we close out our winter sports season, we want to thank all of our student-athletes and coaches for their dedication and hard work. We are now preparing for an exciting season of spring activities, events, and performances.
As we move into the final stretch of the school year, please continue to check in with your 9th graders to ensure they are on track. Students should have at least 6 credits earned, C grades or better, and 90% or higher attendance. Staying on top of these benchmarks now will set them up for long-term success.
This is also the time of year when we begin senior meetings to ensure all members of the Class of 2026 are on track to graduate in June. Our counseling staff will be scheduling meetings throughout the spring to support students and families as we prepare for commencement.
We are officially in testing season as well. All 10th graders will take the MCA exams on March 18th and 23rd. Juniors will take the ACT on April 8th. These are important benchmarks and opportunities for our students to demonstrate what they have learned.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and school community.
—Go Rockets!

It has been exciting to learn something new. I've never done vegetable gardening before.- YouGrowGardens Founder, Abigail Sievers |
|
Student Plants the Seeds of Something New |
This year, JM offered a new class, Experience Leadership, as a way to foster leaders within our school community. Abigail signed up, interested to take a class that was different than other offerings. She has been persistent all school year to make her vision a reality...asking questions, researching writing grants, etc... and now she is ready to launch YouGrowGardens. This initiative is meant to teach vegetable garden skills to JM students and families. Families who participate will receive lessons from a community partners, build their own garden bed & be able to keep or donate their harvest. Please consider joining her!

Celebrations & Spotlights

Rockets Fuel a Love of Reading |
Everyone was all smiles after spending a half hour reading together. Each month, students from JM walk over to Washington Elementary to sit down with second graders and read....and inevitably also talk about high school, favorite shows, and what they like to eat for lunch. Washington classroom teachers share that this is an absolute highlight for their students...and the high school students can't wait to go back!
"When do we get to come back again?"
"That was SO fun!"
"They are so cute." - JM Students

Academics & Opportunities |
There are many ways we work to support your student at JM. This section will highlight a couple each month.
|
|
|
Academic Support & Homework Help |
Does your student want some extra academic support? Here's some ideas: |
-
Talk with the Classroom Teacher - they are first go-to, as they know the content, assignments & learning goals
- Visit the W.I.N. Room (What I Need) during the school day. It is located just inside of the Library, open most periods & staff by JM teachers. This is a great opportunity to get some 1-on-1 help from a staff offering a new perspective, make up a test or have an accountability buddy. See schedule for times/days.
- Attend After School Homework Help. This is a free offering to JM students, runs out of the Library, and is staffed by JM teachers. You do not have to attend every day - do what works for you!

|
Attendance is the strongest predictor of academic success—students who attend school consistently are far more likely to earn credits and progress on pace.
TIPS:
|
-
Set Clear Expectations: expect attendance even on low-motivation days (unless truly ill)
-
Support Healthy Routines: keep a consistent sleep schedule (teens still need ~8–10 hours)
-
Plan Ahead for Mornings: prep clothes, backpack, and Chromebook the night before
-
Stay Connected to School: check Skyward regularly
-
Reinforce Responsibility: tie privileges (car use, outings, tech access) to school attendance
